FISHing for More Information, Molecular Diagnostics in Cytology
Moderator: Kristen A. Atkins, M.D.
Panelists: Jesse Voss, CT(ASCP)
Jennifer Hunt, M.D.
Robin LeGallo, M.D.
+Show/Hide Description
Educational Objectives:
1) Understand the role molecular studies have in diagnostic realms
2) Integrate cytologic features and molecular tests for appropriate treatment
3) Understand how a new molecular test gets integrated into a clinical laboratory
4) Review educational opportunities for cytotechnologists to blend molecular diagnostics into their career
This scientific session will host 3 dynamic speakers who will take the mystery out of molecular diagnostics. Using common molecular testing strategies such as florescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and PCR, the panel will discuss applications of common molecular tests. The speakers will use pulmonary, pediatric and thyroid diagnoses as a stepping stone to discuss the fundamentals of the most commonly utilized tests and how the results impact patient management. The requirements for integrating new molecular tests into a clinical laboratory will be reviewed. Examples of “bench to bedside” will be reviewed as the speakers discuss ongoing research utilizing various molecular techniques. The session will conclude with a review of educational opportunities and certificate programs available for cytotechnologists wishing to gain expertise in molecular testing.
